Buzz-o’Bumble

In Nelson we have a Mac User Group meeting that meets once a month and I tottle along and add my five cents worth of tips and tricks that I have picked up along the way, as you do.

Following an email request for help I went along to help new Mac users, Lindsay and Jan, get the best from using iPhoto. I enjoy helping people and on the promise of a fresh orange and date muffin and a good cup of coffee along I went. I realised that I had visited the beautiful property once before while on a garden trail a few years back.

I got a very pleasant surprise as I turned up the driveway- the Lindsay was Lindsay Yeo! New Zealand readers would know Lindsay. I feel I have grown up with Lindsay– popular Wellington radio personality on 2ZB– creator of Buzz o’Bumble.

I told him of the time when I was teaching in Foxton and a largish earthquake hit Wellington. Lindsay told us via the radio to get in a doorway or safe place- I did and a few seconds later the shockwave reached us! Knowing in advance helped prepare me for the shake ahead.

Jan makes environmentally friendly, innovative cloth nappies (diapers for my American readers) for sale via the internet and wanted to be able to manage the photos he was taking for adding to their website, YoYoNappy.com.

It was really great to spend the morning with them both. Lindsay was a large part of growing up in NZ when I was younger. Another face-to-face connection that I would never had made without the power of the internet.

If you listened to 2ZB and know how to sing the Buzz o’Bumble song please leave a comment and I will pass this link on to him.

  1. Hi Allanah
How neat for you to get to meet Lindsay Yoe. I was a little girl living in Wellington in the late 70s early 80s and used to listen to Lindsay and Buzz O Bumble all the time. I used to love the Buzz O Bumble song, and I remember seeing Buzz O Bumble at James Smiths Christmas Parades. When my little sister was about 2, Dad rang up the radio station and had her talk to Lindsay via the phone. She said “Yoyo – you and Buzz O Bumble are the best!” and they played it on the radio. I got a real kick out of hearing my baby sister on the radio -I seem to remember they played it more than once. Lindsay – Allanah said she’d pass on my comment so I just wanted to say Hi and thanks for being a memorable part of my childhood. 🙂

  2. Hello Allanah

I just want to say thank you for your item about meeting Lyndsay, or ‘Yo-yo’ as we called him. I remember Lyndsay taking over from Jim Healy, and they were big boots to fill, but filled they were. I knew the writing was on the wall for 2ZB, and most of its hosts, when the Commnet group of RNZ stations were restructured and centred in Dorkland. Privatisation just finished the job off. That Lyndsay was able to hold on for so long just proved his popularity. (I seem to remember that Lyndsay stopped putting his name forward for the award of most popular radio announcer in NZ because he kept winning the award year after year.) Anyway, at the time of 2ZB’s demise, I sent a number of letters to the those involved in destroying the station and to the newspapers, but they all fell on deaf ears of course.
One question that I’ve always wanted an answer to is… (I think 2ZB was still in the old Broadcasting House) When Wayne Mowatt was station manager for a brief time, live on air he ordered Lyndsay to shave off his beard, and there was quite a kafuffle. Was this for real or was it a put on?

    Anyway, thanks for the memories.

  3. As an NZBC employee in the seventies, I fondly remember the morning Lyndsay asked me to be Batman on his show, when the real caped crusader failed to show. I was a newsreader and knew little of zb’s rather odd promotions. So Lyndsay interviewed me, fortunately I was familiar with Adam West. YoYo was a genuine chap, from Southland. As I recall, his style was preferred over Jim’s for zb breakfast.

  4. Fond memories of Lindsay Yeo, Paul Holmes, Justin Du Fresne, Leighton Smith, Brian Jennings ….. 2ZB was the best ! Especially enjoyed listening to Lindsay on a Sunday morning playing favourites such as Cathy and the Cucumbers singing Daytrip to Bangor …. Used to love listening to Lindsay’s family too on Xmas Days.

  5. I am interested in writing a wgtn childrens book, and my subjects meets up with Lindsays characters Wally.Buzz.o bumble etc. Will i have to ask permission or are they ”trade marked”. This is a courtesy call for that information.

  6. I remember Buzz o Bumble on one of the telethons. They were playing the Buzz o Bumble song and the kids at our place were singing along heartily. One of them was a little young and instead of singing Buzz o Bumble he sang Bust the Bumble.

  7. I’m 47 years young and still occasionally break out in song singing the Buzz O’Bumble theme song when I am feeling really happy because that’s how it made me feel as a child when I listened to the show each day! I found this thread because I was hoping to finding a recording of it online to hear again!
